Formule: Jour 1 et 2
Quantity

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th March 2022

Goals

The workshop aims to:

  • handle interactive equipment, become familiar with its capabilities and limitations, and master connections and computer integration;
  • discover and implement real-time event management software by approaching it simply through the use of sensors; and
  • program devices to easily process sensor data.

Prerequisites

Day 1: No prerequisites.

Day 2: Basic knowledge of Max (optional on Day 1) and motivation are required.

Participants may bring their own computers, especially for Day 2, provided they have Max installed beforehand, ideally a demo version less than one month old.

Compatible Max versions: 5 to 8.

Material

The room is equipped with PCs and MIDI-USB interfaces. Sensors and interfaces are provided.

Content

Day 1:

  • Overview of simple sensors and examples of artistic installations or performances.
  • Capture themes (example: breath) and analysis of solutions.
  • Manipulation of various sensors, triggering and modulation of sounds/images/lights/movements.
  • Connecting sensors, setting up a data acquisition chain using the MIDI protocol.
  • Receiving data in Max.
  • Optional, depending on the participants' level: Basic principles of modular programming in Max, object/message/number distinction, introduction to some simple objects, order of execution of objects.

Day 2:

  • Programming exercises linking sensor data to sound or visual actions.
  • Introduction to sensor data processing: analysis.
  • Implementation of state machines in Max.
  • Practical application to an example of an interactive device traversing several phases.
