Presence detector
This sensor is a simplified version of the sensitive floor mat, useful for analyzing a person's presence on at least 8 different zones, and/or combined with the data from other simple sensors.
This sensitive tile doesn't have a midi output. It's a single discreet square mat (made to be hidden beneath a carpet, a rug or a dance mat). We recommend covering it for two reasons : protecting the sensitive mat which otherwise could be damaged by heels, and could take visitors by surprise. It has been observed that a few spectators do not dare interact with the sensor mats when they remain visible within an exhibition...
The sensitive mat can be used on the floor, within a corridor, in a room, in front of a specific spot on a stage, but also stuck against a wall or a table awaiting the press of a hand. It can also be equipped upon shoes with very small areas.
This sensor acts as a switch that opens and closes a circuit (open or closed/On or Off) and can be used directly as such, plugged to a light or a small motor.

Connectors
This sensor can be plugged in two different manners depending on the interface, depending on the available inputs : either by a 3 pin connector for an analog input, or by a flat ribbon câble whose wire amount depends on the card used to acquire the sensor's signal.
Connections | Carpet tile sold per unit | Has connectors |
Analog 3 way connector | Yes | Yes |
16 wire ribbon cable for 8 switches | Yes | No |
10 wire ribbon cable for MiniWi | Yes | No |
10 wire ribbon cable for ZIP | Yes | No |
No connections | Yes | No |
This graph goes over the standardized connectors for our other buttons and switches. One can find a description of these options on our general information page. However, there might be slight differences in the case of the sensitive mat.
It is always possible to order the mat tiles per unit rather than by sets, for the flat ribbon cable connector.
Connecting to analog inputs
We have thus separated the page about sensor connectors, except in the case of a « 3 pin connector » when the connector is directly integrated with the mat. This 3 pin connector is located by default at the end of a 50 cm wire between the mat and its connector, but this length can be extended upon request. The 3 pin connector provides a resistor that prevents any short-circuits when plugging it on an analog input.
The extension cord for the analog input is NOT included, and must be ordered separately with the correct length.
Connecting to a digital input
If the chosen connector is the one with the flat ribbon cable, one just needs to order one with a header crimped on only one side, in the Digital input section. There are various amounts of wires to chose from depending on the card one is planning to plug the sensitive mat to. The default length for flat ribbon cables is 2 meters. To add more length, select options for 10 or 16 extra wires (per meter) in the alocated section, ( Connections/Digital Input / Ribbon cable) .
The option « No connections » implies that the switch (or in this case the sensitive mat) is alone, without any wires or connectors. One can then order any needed connector type aside.
For the sensitive carpet tile/sensitive floor mat, many of these options require the "no connection" option because the proper ribbon cable length must be purchased aside.
Caracteristics
By default, the tiles are squares with sides of 25x25 cm.
The kit contains foam pierced with holes, the base material needed for the sensitive mat. The price of the foam is by square meter. In this cas, the size and shape of the sensor is ajustable to one's will. Documentation on how to make metalic craft paper is available.
The protective coating is not supplied.
